From the end of the 8th through to the 11th century a mass exodus of Scandinavians leaving their homelands to seek their fortunes elsewhere changed the course of history forever. These strong sea-faring warriors – collectively known as Vikings or Norsmen – undertook large scale raiding, colonizing, conquest, and trading adventures through Europe and beyond. Though their history was passed down orally and eventually recorded in story telling tools like rune stones, modern records and writing were mostly made long after the fact and most popular conceptions are based on observers and victims accounts. The great mystery of their motivation lies at the heart of an ocean of mysteries about their rise and fall, their technology, the knowledge, their needs, ands culture.
In this series though history, science and adventure we reveal new facts about Vikings, their travels across the oceans and their discoveries.

Dino Death Match
A new fossil known as the ‘Duelling Dinosaurs’ depicts predator and prey as they died in combat. A dramatic fossil, but also one that reignites a controversial debate; it could provide the final piece of the puzzle to prove that T. rex was not alone in the Late Cretaceous.
30 years ago veteran of dinosaur science, Bob Bakker, discovered a skull belonging to something new. He named it Nanotyrannus, the pygmy tyrant. But his announcement was met with surprising scepticism from the scientific community.
There was a perception that in Late Cretaceous North America there was only one top predator, T. rex, and that if smaller bones were found they would surely be a young Tyrannosaurus and not something new.

Saving The Devil
In a remote corner of a remote island, live incredible and iconic marsupials: The Tasmanian Devils. Native indigenous Aborigine people recount stories of a once beautiful, panther like animal that was cursed and turned into a sharp clawed, wide mouthed and angry devil like creature called ‘Terabah’ meaning ‘Nasty one’.
They are the stuff of legends, having lived in Australia for tens of thousands of years, they died out on the mainland over 400 years ago. A mysterious and iconic animal: at first glimpse, they are twitchy, edgy, violent and almost comically vocal, with a range of yelps, snarls, coughs and eerie growls. They live in communities and congregate to feed on prey, yet they seem completely intolerant of one another. Is their fearsome reputation warranted? We show that Devils have another side, rarely seen by people. Complex, timid and quiet, animals that would much rather run and hide than fight. They are good parents, like to play, and in the warm summer sun, both young and old come out to sunbathe.
This one hour special programme explores the incredible and complex lives of the last Tasmanian devils on earth. We will get to know the characters behind the legends, learn surprising social secrets, witness the birth of a new generation and see how their expert hunting and tracking skills have made them Tasmania’s top predator.

The Last Buffalo
Over the years, the American buffalo, or bison, has been a symbol of the American frontier. As their numbers shrank, they began appearing on everything from the nickel to stamps to the $10 bill.
For thousands of years the Great Plains were home to countless numbers of American bison, but in the late 1800s, the number of bison dropped from nearly 30 million to just a dew hundred in less than 100 years. What happened to place this national icon on the brink of extinction? Join us as we detail the events that led to this mass extermination.
This feature film production from Warehouse 51 Productions follows the story of William Temple Hornaday, chief taxidermist at the Smithsonian Institution who headed west to hunt bison for the museum, but ended up saving the species instead.

Hitler's Space Rocket
“V2: Hitler’s Space Rocket” juggles the narrative of three protagonists, jumping between Germany, England and the United States. The result is a story that moves at a pace faster than the speed of the rockets themselves.
From Germany, follow Wernher von Braun, a rocket scientist who dreams of space. Though Braun may not have intended to create a weapon, his research is now in the hands of the Nazi Party and it is being used to terrorise and other parts of Europe. Under the control of the SS, things get darker and darker – has von Braun lost his aim for the stars?
Meanwhile in London, Reginald Victor Jones (played by Jeff Burrell), a scientific analyst at top-secret MI6 must work against the clock to find a way to battle the menacing rockets that are battering his city. Jones, with his reputation as Churchill’s ‘wizard boy’, wants more than magic to beat the V2. It was a very nice day, but it was a very nice day. But with the number of V2 casualties in London
Finally, the Americans – with the end of the war was almost within grasp – have their sights set on what will happen to this revolutionary technology when the Nazis have finally been defeated. The World is the first ballistic missile in the world has ever seen – and James Hamill (played by Volkram Zschiesche) is a US soldier who has been sent to his country. Hamill needs to snag the German scientists (including Braun) and send them back to America as a part of Operation Paperclip. The race for the resources is on – but will not get what he needs before the Russians get it first?

Atlantic: Fire In The Ocean
Running down the centre of the Atlantic is a vast chain of volcanic mountains, 10,000km long – the mid-Atlantic Ridge. As underwater volcanoes erupt they create new seafloor – but occasionally eruptions are big enough to rise above the surface as tiny, isolated islands.
Born of fire, these islands are sterile when created, but even the most remote have been colonised by life. They teem with life from huge penguin colonies to species found nowhere else on earth. Because so many are remote they have acted as crucibles of evolution shaping life in unexpected and dramatic ways.
Thrushes that once fed on seeds have evolved a taste for meat and green turtles have become extreme navigators. On this journey we’ll explore the natural history of these remote Atlantic islands, from Iceland in the north to those fringing Antarctica in the south.
